Expressing Colostrum in Pregnancy- the importance of technique

This slight adjustment in technique can make the difference between 2 drops to 2ml in one sitting.

When I 33 weeks pregnant, I was handed a brochure on "how to" express colostrum antenatally.  I squealed because this was the first pregnancy that antenatal expression of colostrum had been discussed. I was already in the thick of milk & cookies by Jewels and was well versed in the power of colostrum. But YAY!! society was catching on to this amazing process to begin the breastfeeding journey for Mama & the goodness colostrum can bring if needed immediately post birth and even months down the track to baby BUT.....

The brochure felt so out-dated and the old school diagrams missed a key technical aspect.

With your thumb & pointer finger girl, you want to actively pull back towards your chest wall and gently (but firmly) pull through your nipple. Pulling through is key here.  You essentially want to be "milking your nipple" Being relaxed and either looking at baby pictures or visualising that colostrum flowing is going to help big time.
And one last hot tip- if the colostrum stops flowing. Take a pause and with long strokes massage down your breast towards your nipple moving around the breast like a clock. THEN re-commence expressing colostrum. This will likely help with another ml of colostrum! WINNING MAMA!!
The milk & cookies by Jewels Antenatal Colostrum Expressing Kit is jam packed full of everything you need to get started expressing that precious liquid gold in the later stages of your pregnancy.
